MEDICAL DIRECTOR, NEURODEVELOPMENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT 

1 Full Time Permanent Position

The Department of Pediatrics at CHEO, University of Ottawa is recruiting a full-time, permanent Pediatrician in the Department of Pediatrics to serve as the Medical Director for the Department of Neurodevelopmental Health. 

The Department of Pediatrics is affiliated with CHEO, the CHEO Research Institute and the University of Ottawa. Together, we provide outstanding patient care, leading research, and quality pediatric medical education. With 18 distinct Divisions, the Department of Pediatrics provides health care to newborns, children and youth of the Ottawa area, as well as those from Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, Nunavut and parts of Northern Ontario (population of approximately 1.8 million). 

CHEO is launching a new service for children and youth with extensive and complex behaviour, social, medical, and mental health support needs. This new service will address the needs of children who are falling through the gaps of our current healthcare system, and who are presenting with behaviour health challenges. It will bring together a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals including a psychiatrist, a psychologist, behaviour clinicians, social workers, OT, SLP, nurses, and more, to provide wrap-around care to the family to stabilize their situation, rapidly implement an intervention plan aimed at addressing the needs of the family as a whole, and facilitate appropriate transition to community-based supports. A dedicated pathway is currently being created for these vulnerable children and youth up to 18 years of age. 

The person in this role will serve as the medical director for the Neurodevelopmental Health department. The duties for this position include working with the multidisciplinary team to co-create and oversee the model of care, as well as to provide direct clinical care, including assessment and short-term care for children, youth, and their families. As a member of the Department of Pediatrics, the person in this position will have the opportunity to teach medical learners and engage in scholarly work.  

Applicants for this position must have a fellowship in Pediatrics from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in diagnosis and care of individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities, as well as to candidates with further training and expertise in leadership, medical education or research. Academic rank and remuneration will be commensurate with training and experience. A preference will be given to candidates who are competent in both official languages (English & French).

Compensation for this position will be commensurate with similar positions at CHEO and will include 6 weeks paid vacation, 2 weeks paid conference time, and infrastructure support for research, if required. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a hospital- based academic practice, engage in teaching, and participate in innovative research and advocacy. They will be appointed at the University of Ottawa academic rank commensurate with experience and academic accomplishment.
